Staten Island Chuck predicted early spring so let's celebrate with a shoreline walk along the Gowanus Canal!
Join the Gowanus Dredgers for a brisk hike along the Gowanus shoreline to welcome in an early Spring. The walk will begin at at the entrance to Smith / 9th Street Subway. Expect to walk about 1 mile, dress for the weather and there are NO restrooms on the route. The narrated tour will discuss the neighborhood's history, recent past, changes expected in the next year and how you may get involved to affect the neighborhood's future.
Owen Foote, a local architect and avid canoeist who has advocated for neighborhood improvements over the past 25 years will lead the tour and discuss the origins of the estuary & canal, the classic architectural buildings, the challenges with recent developments and how sewage overflow can be reduced, one flush at a time. The walk will head north to the pumping station, and after the walk everyone can warm up and continue the conversation at the Dredgers boathouse with hot coffee and croissants. A $25 contribution per person is suggested as a donation to sustain the Dredgers programs. Heavy rain will cancel but a light drizzle and we'll still walk as that's a great opportunity to see live sewer overflow!
